Your roof can handle rain, snow, sleet, and heat and continue to protect your home for years. However, it isn’t impervious to storm damage. Strong winds can blow off shingles and cause tree limbs to fall on the structure. If your house needs roof repair or replacement after a summer thunderstorm, take the following steps when you ensure everyone is safe.

What to Do if a Storm Damages Your Roof

1. Assess the Damage

Walk around the perimeter of your home and check for shingles, tiles, or flashing that was blown off. You should also inspect the roof from the ground for any obvious damage—large sections of missing shingles, holes, or dents caused by blowing debris. Inside the home, walk around the attic to check for leaks, mold, water stains, and peeling paint. Take pictures of any issues you see.

2. Request an Inspection & Estimate

roof repairDo not climb on your roof, as it could be structurally unsound after a storm. Hire a contractor to get an up-close look and check for less obvious damage — such as dents on vents and shingles from hail — and assess the roof’s integrity. If only a few shingles blew off, they’ll recommend roof repair. If there are large sections of missing shingles or the underlayment and decking are heavily damage by water, they’ll likely need to replace the whole structure.

3. Call Your Insurance Provider

After you receive an estimated roof repair or replacement cost, submit a home insurance claim. Most providers require you to file one as soon as you reasonably can; they typically will not cover any worsening damage that results from waiting too long to file. Provide your photos and the roofing contractor’s estimate. If the damage forced you to live somewhere else — such as a hotel — temporarily, include the receipt with your claim.
