It’s breakfast, and you’re contemplating the menu at your favorite diner. You’re faced with a momentous decision: waffles, pancakes, or French toast? While all three are certainly pleasing to the palate, these popular breakfast foods are not without their unique attributes. The following guide breaks down the differences and the unique advantages of each.

Waffles

Despite common misconceptions, pancake and waffle batter are not the same. The best waffles are crisp and firm on the outside while being soft on the inside, similar to a donut. Waffles are also made with the help of a waffle iron, which gives them their signature shape and design. Like pancakes, waffles go great with a slab of butter and as much, or as little, syrup as you please. Waffles are also delicious when accompanied by fruit. You might skip the syrup altogether in favor of some strawberries, blueberries, or bananas.

Pancakes

breakfast Dayton, OHPancakes are soft all over, unlike waffles. They also have a spongy texture that is perfect for soaking up the syrup. Pancakes are fried, either in a pan or griddle. While they can also pair quite well with fruits, pancakes are best with breakfast meats. This includes bacon, or preferably, sausage. While some purists believe that breakfast meats should never make contact with the syrup itself, those with more refined palates know this is one of the best parts of the pairing.

French Toast

French toast starts with bread, which can be white bread, or something more interesting, such as brioche, sourdough, or even a baguette. The bread is then dipped into an egg batter, which is usually combined with vanilla and cinnamon. Once completely covered, the bread slices are fried with butter. Syrup and butter are standard toppings, of course, but French toast can also be paired with meats and fruits, depending on your palate.
