Metal roofs in Alaska must contend with deep snow that can accumulate behind chimneys and pipes. Crickets are an essential part of any metal roofing system, protecting pipes that protrude above the roof. If you’re considering metal roofing for your home, the following is an overview of these critical components and how they help ensure you get the most from your investment.

What Are Crickets?

Crickets are small, pyramid-shaped structures designed to divert shedding snow away from pipes and electrical penetrations.  Otherwise, they might be sheared off from the heavy Alaskan snow shedding from the roof, potentially damaging your home’s plumbing or electrical systems.  If possible, roof penetrations should be near the ridge.  If this is not possible, crickets need to be used.

Proper Cricket Installation

Crickets are sized based on pitch of the roof. They should always be installed flush with the low area of the panels. The bottom flange will need to be notched to go over the high ribs of the metal roofing.  To attach a cricket, apply butyl tape or caulk to the bottom of the flange and secure using roofing screws into the roof underlayment.
