Metal roofing offers many benefits, including energy efficiency, durability, and environmental friendliness. Just like other types of roofing materials, though, insulating a metal roof helps minimize heat loss, making your building interior more comfortable and reducing your heating and cooling costs in the process. You have various insulation options to choose from, each with benefits and drawbacks. The following guide explores the options and how to insulate your metal roof.

Types

There are three main types of insulation that work best for metal roofs. Fiberglass batt is made of thin strands of molten glass and can be cut to fit the dimensions of any space. It is the most cost-effective insulation and is generally easy to install. Bear in mind that it is not waterproof, so it shouldn't be installed in foundations or other areas vulnerable to moisture. You can wear gloves and protective eyewear since it can also irritate the skin and eyes during handling.

Rigid board insulation consists of foam sheets. It offers the highest levels of thermal resistance, and the thinness of the sheets means it can be installed with fewer gaps and joints, resulting in more comprehensive coverage. Rigid board insulation must be installed properly to ensure a tight fit and avoid ultraviolet light exposure, which can damage the boards.

Metal Roofing

Spray foam insulation is made from chemical ingredients that create foam when sprayed with a special applicator. The foam expands and dries quickly, providing a tight fit and fast installation. It is the most popular form of metal roofing insulation because of its affordability and effectiveness. Still, it requires special tools and knowledge and should only be installed by a professional.

Installation

To insulate a metal roof with fiberglass batt or rigid boards, you will need first to install plywood as roof sheathing. Lay the plywood vertical to the roof joists and attach it with roofing nails.

Next, you can apply building paper over the sheathing by overlapping each sheet by six inches and stapling it in place to protect against moisture.

Then, install sheets of the batt or rigid foam over the entire roof. Line the sheets up close without overlapping them to ensure a uniform surface.

You can then seal the seams between the sheets with duct tape to prevent moisture and air leaks.

Finally, place the metal panels over the insulation and attach them according to the manufacturer's instructions.
