Tennessee is the most biodiverse inland state, boasting a wide variety of trees thanks to its mostly humid subtropical climate. Even with these ideal conditions, you’ll still need proper tree care if you plan to grow or cultivate trees on your property. Below are some of the state’s most common trees you could add to your landscape.

5 Trees Commonly Found in Tennessee

1. Tulip Poplar

Named the state tree, the tulip poplar is known by other names like yellow poplar, tulipwood, and tulip tree. As it is fast-growing and one of the tallest hardwoods, it provides a significant supply of timber because of its height. It is characterized by its tulip-shaped flowers.

2. American Beech

A deciduous tree, the American beech grows slowly but can reach heights of more than 100 feet. It has smooth, gray bark and dense foliage of serrated, dark green leaves that turn a light tan color during cold weather. From April to May, it produces yellow-green flowers.

3. Flowering Dogwood

The flowering dogwood, adapted to Tennessee's unpredictable weather, is quite short, rarely growing higher than 25 feet. It is popular for its beauty—it blooms small flowers with large, white petals during spring and produces vibrant red berries in the fall.

4. Black Walnut

Identifiable by its dark, rough-looking bark, the black walnut tree grows 36 to 48 inches annually. It can reach up to 75 feet tall but has fewer limbs than others, giving it a sturdy appearance. Its nuts turn black after falling to the ground, staining the surface.

5. Scarlet Oak

A member of the red oak family, the scarlet oak is distinct for its bright red foliage in the autumn and lacks the well-formed shape the variety is known for. It grows up to 50 to 70 feet tall and offers ample shade. While it is low maintenance, it requires routine tree care to live long.
