Ceramic tile floors are a smart and stylish addition to any home. However, although tile floors are durable, you still want to put extra effort in house cleaning to ensure that your floor stays glossy and visually appealing. Below are some tips for how to take care of your flooring and extend its usable life.

How to Care for Ceramic Floor Tiles

1. Clean Spills Immediately

Ceramic is a durable surface and one of the easiest to maintain in terms of house cleaning. However, it can still stain if spills are left to set. As soon as an accident happens, apply a solution of water and a mild detergent with a rag to prevent permanent damage to your tile floor.

2. Keep the Grout Clean

house cleaningGrout cleaning is one of the most important elements of house cleaning and keeping a floor looking polished. Grout absorbs grease and dirt easily because of how porous it is. A stiff brush and hot water should do the trick. If the stain truly won’t come out, combine water and baking soda to scrub it out.

3. Sweep & Vacuum

Regularly sweeping and vacuuming keeps dirt and debris at bay, especially before becoming too deeply embedded in the tile. If you neglect this step, your floors can become dull. Use a soft brush for this to avoid scratching the surface of the tile. Cleaning loose debris will keep your floors looking polished and will save you more work in the long run.

4. Mop Once a Week

In addition to sweeping and vacuuming, you should mop your tile floors weekly to prevent a buildup of grime. Tile should be cleaned with mild detergent  and warm water. Chamois-style mops and rag mops are the ideal choice for cleaning tile. Avoid using a sponge mop, as it will push dirt from tiles and directly into the grout.

5. Look Out for Residue

If you’ve cleaned your tile floors and they still look subpar, there might be a layer of soap residue that’s too stubborn to come off. If you’ve used a floor cleaner not meant for tile, or neglect to mop, soap scum can develop on your tile. For this, you’ll either need to use vinegar or a targeted tile cleaner directly on the soap scum, and for tougher stains, trisodium phosphate can do the trick as well.
