North Carolina state inspections are necessary to keep your vehicle registered and roadworthy every year. If it’s your first time receiving an inspection in the state, you may have some questions about the process. Reviewing the following answers can help prepare you to pass the inspection process.

A Guide to Annual Car Inspections

What is the North Carolina emissions test?

Almost half of the counties in North Carolina require that your auto mechanic conducts an emissions test in conjunction with the safety inspection of your vehicle. This is designed to protect air quality.

The assessment involves using a computer diagnostics software program to ensure your vehicle’s exhaust emissions meet the state’s restrictions. Every vehicle that is more than three years old, or that has more than 70,000 miles, must undergo the test.

What vehicles don’t require inspections?

North Carolina State InspectionsA brand-new vehicle — one that has not been previously owned — won’t require an inspection for its first year of ownership. However, a North Carolina state inspection will be required for the second year of ownership.

Since the vehicle is new, an emissions test must be conducted on the vehicle in that second year, as well. Vehicles that are at least 35 years old are also exempt from inspections in North Carolina.

What’s included in the safety inspection?

During the safety inspection, a licensed mechanic will check all components that are essential to the car’s operation, including all lights and signals, the brakes, the tires, the mirrors, the windshield wipers, and the exhaust and steering systems.

They’ll also check to ensure that your vehicle complies with after-factory window tinting laws, if applicable.

What happens if my vehicle fails the inspection?

If your vehicle fails the safety inspection or the emissions test, you will have the opportunity to submit it for a second inspection. You have 60 days from the date of the failed inspection to fix the problem and pass a second inspection.

The second inspection will only look at the components that caused you to fail the first inspection. If the cause of the failure was the emissions test, you may qualify for a waiver in certain circumstances.
