Asphalt remains a popular paving material mostly for its durability. With proper care, your blacktop can last up to 20 years. Nonetheless, it remains susceptible to temperature fluctuations that could shorten its lifespan. Below is a closer look at how you can maintain the condition of your asphalt no matter the temperature.

How Temperature Changes Affect Asphalt

Extreme temperatures can damage even the toughest of materials, including asphalt. At temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, asphalt may start to soften and crumble. Fissures in its surface and subsurface become an entry point for water, which can exacerbate the rate of erosion.

Asphalt is also vulnerable in extremely cold weather. The presence of moisture in the substrate will freeze once the temperature drops far enough. Since water expands when frozen, it results in further damage to your asphalt. When left unaddressed, this leads to potholes and cracks.

How to Reduce Damage

Asphalt is still a reliable asphaltpavement choice, even in fluctuating temperatures, as long as you install it correctly. For it to withstand extreme weather changes, the asphalt mixture must have low air volume, achieved through compaction. It makes the asphalt more viscous and better at resisting deformation. But for already installed pavements, there are a few tips to prevent temperature damage, including:

  • Inspect regularly: Conduct a walk-through on your asphalt pavement whenever you can. Frequent inspections let you spot troubles at their onset.

  • Repair as needed: Even the smallest of gaps on the surface can lead to cracks and potholes over time. Do patch repairs for smaller areas or repave as needed to maintain its structural integrity.

  • Seal on schedule: Regular sealing protects the asphalt against harsh elements, such as sun, water, ice, de-icing agents, and other chemicals. Sealcoat your pavement every three to five years for better resistance.
