Migraines are different from ordinary headaches, bringing a wide range of possible symptoms with varying degrees of intensity. Many people are surprised to discover that there are also different types. While there are up nearly a dozen varieties acknowledged by medical professionals, below are a few of the most common.

5 Migraine Types and Their Symptoms

1. Episodic

This type is the most common variety, and symptoms include pulsating pain that can range in intensity from moderate to severe. Discomfort may be isolated to one side of the head. It’s also possible to experience sensitivity to light and sound.

2. Aura

“Aura” refers to the onset of symptoms which can develop up to a half hour prior to the actual headache. Symptoms are typically visual, and could include wavy lines, flashing lights, or temporary vision loss. Some people also experience numbness or tingling, weakness in the extremities, and disruption of motor skills.

3. Brainstem

A rare type of migraine, this condition is often confused with a stroke due to the similarity of symptoms. People experience vertigo, loss of balance, slurred speech, and numbness. Typically, signs manifest slowly and before head pain.

4. Silent

Also referred to as an acephalgic migraine, this type is unique in that it has symptoms other than headaches. For example, people typically experience vision changes, such as variations in color perception. The condition is most common in individuals over 50.

5. Chronic

To be considered chronic, migraines must be experienced at least 15 days out of the month for at least three months. Typically, these headaches are less frequent at first but increase in frequency over time. The condition affects three to five percent of people in the U.S., and up to three percent of people who experience typical, episodic varieties go on to develop the chronic condition each year.
