Fall is coming soon and bringing colder temperatures. Before you know it, you'll need to turn on the furnace to warm up on a chilly day. When you do, you want to be sure everything works properly. Thankfully, many common heating issues are preventable with some simple maintenance, so get ready for the new season by tackling these easy tasks.

How to Get Your Furnace Ready for Colder Weather

1. Clean Up

Keeping the area surrounding the furnace clear is important for both safety and airflow. Check the unit's manual for the recommended clearance, and move items that you've stored around the appliance during the summer. In general, at least 3 feet is recommended for optimal efficiency.

It's also a good time to check the intake and return air vents throughout the home to ensure they're clear of furniture or other items. Clean the vents with a damp rag to improve indoor air quality throughout the house.

2. Change the Filter

The air filter typically needs  to be changed every 60 to 90 days. Get in the habit of changing the filter at the start of every season to ensure adequate airflow. A dirty filter can cause the unit to work harder than necessary, inflating your energy bills, causing mechanical problems, and increasing the likelihood of a breakdown.

If you have pets, check the screen once a month to ensure it's free of excess pet dander and hair. Also, family members with allergies may avoid uncomfortable symptoms with more frequent replacements.

3. Check the Pilot Light

Turn on the appliance and check the pilot light. It should be a steady, blue flame. If the light is flickering or is yellow or orange, there's something wrong inside the furnace.

In some cases, a yellow flame is a sign of carbon monoxide buildup in the exhaust vent, so check this component for a blockage. There may be an issue with the fan, which will require professional assistance. A technician will ensure the flame looks and operates as it should for maximum safety.
