Winter has arrived, and temperatures are dipping below freezing more often. The consistent cold means it's time to run the furnace for extended periods, but doing so also means higher utility bills. Fortunately, that doesn’t have to be the case with the following simple steps.

How to Save Money on Winter Furnace Operation

1. Seal Out Drafts

Air drafts enter your home through cracks and gaps around windows, doors, and plumbing and electrical penetrations. The resulting heat loss causes the furnace to work harder and consume more energy to maintain warm temperatures. Apply caulk and weatherstripping to these problematic spots to keep heated air in and cold air out.

2. Put Ceiling Fans to Work

If you have a ceiling fan, reverse the direction of the fan blades to turn clockwise, as this forces air up. The motion circulates the warm air from the ceiling throughout the room, helping keep an even, comfortable temperature without your having to turn up the thermostat.

3. Adjust the Thermostat

The thermostat dictates the temperature your furnace or AC needs to maintain. Always set it slightly lower in the winter than you do in the summer—the higher the temperature, the harder your furnace works, consuming more energy. When you’re sleeping or not home, lower the temperature by 5 to 10 degrees to reduce how often it cycles on.

4. Change Air Filters

Furnace filters trap dust, debris, and other airborne contaminants, getting clogged with dirt over time. When that happens, airflow becomes restricted and causes the furnace to operate less efficiently because of the extra strain. Replace filters at least every three months or clean them if they’re reusable.
