Powder coating is an application of a dry epoxy powder that has been cured under heat, which helps it form a sort of skin over a metal surface. The result is a strong layer of protection against all kinds of damage that would otherwise mar the appearance and function of your metal objects. If you have a powder-coated fence, protect your investment by following these maintenance tips.

How to Maintain a Powder Coated Fence

1. Clean With Mild Soap & Water

A mild soap, like a gentle dishwashing liquid, is often all that is needed to remove dirt, grime, and caked-on stains. Place a few capfuls in a bucket, fill it with warm water, and dip a clean sponge or washrag in the soap-water solution.

Scrub the top portion of the fence first, working your way toward the bottom. Powder coating is tough, so use a bit of elbow grease. After scrubbing, rinse the fence with either clean water and a rag or a gentle spray from a garden hose. Let the fence air-dry if the sun is out or wipe it down with a towel.

2. Wax Frequently Handled Surfaces

Certain parts of a powder-coated fence might be touched repeatedly throughout the day. The most commonly handled parts are usually gates, gate handles, and fence posts along well-trafficked walkways.

Frequent touching can accelerate wear and tear of these components, but you can protect them by applying a thin, uniform coat of car wax after cleaning with soap and water. Use a basic, nonabrasive car wax with ultraviolet light-blocking capabilities. After applying, wipe the surface down with a soft dry cloth until no moisture remains and no wax buildup is left behind.

3. Wipe Down Regularly With a Soft Cloth

Make routine wipe-downs a part of your regular cleaning regimen. After mowing the lawn or cleaning the house, get in the habit of running a soft, clean cloth over the fence. This will remove the everyday dirt and stains that can quickly accumulate, and it will make the above two cleaning methods much faster and easier.
