If it's time to update the heating portion of your home's HVAC system, knowing which furnace to go with can be confusing and overwhelming. There's an option for everyone but knowing which one is best for your home's needs isn't always obvious at first glance. Here's a helpful list of information about single-stage vs. two-stage furnaces, to make process easier.

Single-Stage

The first option is called a "single-stage" furnace because there are only two settings: on and off. This makes using the heating system quick and easy, but it doesn't make this option the most efficient choice.

With any HVAC system, it can be ideal to allow for multiple settings, so everyone in the home can be comfortable and the energy expenditure is controllable. A single-stage furnace also doesn't have much of a temperature range, so this option might not be best for someone in a larger home.

Two-Stage

This option has three setting that allow for more of a range in temperature. On the coldest of days, the furnace will switch from "low" to "high," ensuring that everyone in the home is comfortable.

A typical winter day might only call for the system to be on the "low" setting, which makes it an efficient option. These fluctuations also allow the furnace to heat the home more evenly than a single-stage option.

Which Is Right for You?

If you've been satisfied with a single-stage furnace, then it might be best to go for a newer version. If parts of the home aren't as warm as you'd like, then a two-stage furnace sounds like a better bet. This is also the right choice if energy efficiency is of concern.

Homes that are single-level or smaller might benefit from a single-stage, whereas two-or-more-level houses require more range. Calling an HVAC professional can help solidify any decision or answer any remaining questions.
