Part of housekeeping isn’t just about keeping surfaces throughout a residence clean. It’s also about ensuring the tools used to maintain a clean, sanitary home aren’t teeming with bacteria. Sponges, especially those used daily for washing dishes, can become excessively germy without the proper maintenance practices. Use this guide to learn how to clean your household sponges and replace them in a timely manner.

How to Clean Sponges

Disinfect household sponges easily and naturally by soaking them in pure white vinegar, which kills germs that cause foodborne illnesses, as well as mildew, mold, and bacteria. Keep sponges saturated for at least five minutes. Then, wring them out and let them air-dry completely.

housekeepingIf you don’t have white vinegar, bring two cups of water to a rolling boil and soak sponges for five minutes. Remove them with tongs and wait until the sponges cool before squeezing them for quicker drying.

If you want to use bleach, mix three-fourths of a cup of the product in one gallon of water and soak the sponges for five minutes. Rinse them with warm water before allowing them to air-dry.

For microwave disinfection, place damp sponges in a microwave-safe container and heat them for five minutes. Allow them to cool for 15 minutes before handling, and never disinfect dry sponges in the appliance.

When to Replace Sponges

Replace sponges every one to two weeks. Those that continually stay damp are among the germiest items in your home

If you would rather not use sponges due to the litter they create, look for other options, such as washer- and dryer-friendly dishwashing cloths. Launder them weekly in hot water to kill germs and bacteria before throwing them in the dryer.
