It's customary to have a headstone placed at the head of a deceased person's grave. When mourners go to the cemetery in the future to pay their respects, grave markers make it easier to find a loved one's final resting place. Here are a few etiquette tips to follow and common faux pas to avoid when visiting a cemetery.

Do:

Keep your hands off of headstones.

Cemetery monuments and headstones are beautiful works of art that provide insight into the rich lives once lived. The materials can become weathered and corroded with age. You can look but don't touch the materials, as oils from your hands could further accelerate the degradation process.

Follow the rules.

There should be a set of rules posted at the cemetery entrance. This list might include what types of objects you can leave at your deceased loved one's grave (fragile, breakable items are often prohibited), how far away to stay from burial services and other mourners, and how to secure approved items to the headstones. Make sure to follow the rules.

Don't:

Let youngsters play.

Young children might be eager to run around the sprawling grounds and play on headstones at the cemetery. Before the visit, let your youngsters know that this type of behavior is unacceptable. Let them know that they are going to the cemetery to honor the memory of the deceased loved one who is buried there and that it is a time to be quiet and respectful.

Litter.

Don't leave wrappers, loose paper, or any other litter on the cemetery grounds. The debris decreases the aesthetic appeal of the grounds and disrupts the serene, calm atmosphere. Instead, bring an extra bag with you to hold trash or look for a garbage can nearby.
