Artificial turf has become an increasingly popular alternative to live grass. Aside from allowing homeowners to enjoy a lush, green lawn year-round, it helps reduce costs and requires minimal upkeep. However, regardless of its low-maintenance nature, turf still needs to be properly cared for to preserve its appeal and ensure its longevity. Here are a few tips on keeping your synthetic landscape in good condition.

How to Maintain Your Artificial Turf

1. Regular Brushing

Sand fillers are used to give artificial turf filaments the same upright structure as natural grass, but over time, they can become matted down from weather and everyday wear. Brushing your lawn will redistribute the blades and keep them aligned.

Gently go over your turf once a week, paying extra attention to high traffic areas, and use a brush with synthetic bristles, as metal can damage the filaments.

2. Cleaning Up Spills

Accidents are likely to happen from time to time, especially if you have children or frequently entertain outdoors. While many turf lawns are stain-resistant, it’s important to address spills quickly. Some substances, such as red wine, sunscreen, paint, and grease, can create stubborn stains that are more challenging to get out the longer they’re left. Most spills can easily be rinsed with a hose, but for tougher ones, you may use warm water and mild soap.

3. Picking Up Pet Waste

Just like spills, solid pet waste should be picked up immediately whenever possible. Then, hose down the area to eliminate leftover residue. Should you notice any lingering odors, they can be neutralized by applying an enzyme cleaner or pouring a mixture of water and white vinegar over the grass. If the waste has been there for a while, let it dry completely out before removing it.

4. Practicing Proper Weed Control

Although there’s a lower risk of weeds growing in artificial turf than in live grass, they may still pop through the surface of your installation. When this happens, it can displace the mat or make the lawn start to feel lumpy. As a precaution, you can use a water-based herbicide for weed management. If you see weeds, don’t pull them out to avoid uprooting the foundation.
