For many engaged couples, the wedding guest list is one of the biggest challenges of the planning process. Event venues only have so much space, so the two of you likely can't invite everyone you know. The focus must be on narrowing down the names on your list while keeping the peace. Here are a few tips to help you do this.

How to Create a Wedding Guest List

1. Divide Up Your Guest Count

Once you know how many people the venue can hold, you can start building the guest list. To make things fair, the easiest way to go about it is to assign equitable portions of the guest count between your side and your spouse's side. This might mean that you each get to invite half of the total guests, or it may require some more creative divvying. For instance, if your parents have people they want to invite, consider splitting the total guest count into thirds—one-third for you and your partner and one-third for each set of parents.

2. Prioritize Those Closest to You

While it might be a nice gesture to invite an old elementary school friend that you haven't seen in 25 years, their spot on the guest list may be put to better use by going to someone closer to you. By prioritizing close family members and friends, you are ensuring that those who mean the most are able to participate in the big day.

It might feel a bit uncomfortable, but you can always make a list of all potential invitees, then rank each of them on a scale from one to three, based on how close they are. Ones are must-have guests; twos would be nice to have in attendance but are not priorities; and threes are folks on the outermost edge of your social circle who may be less likely to attend anyway.

3. Don't Forget About Plus-Ones

The guests brought by your guests will obviously add to the overall headcount. It's a good idea to set some rules around plus-ones so you don't over-invite. Depending on the size of the venue and the total number of people you wish to invite, you have a few options: letting every invited guest bring a plus-one; limiting plus-ones only to the wedding party and other select invitees; or prohibiting plus-ones altogether.

By following these pointers, you can assemble a solid list of guests to help celebrate your wedding. When you're planning an event in Cincinnati or Columbus, OH, trust Party Pleasers Services.
