The Do's & Don'ts of Dance Class Etiquette for Parents
Enrolling your child in dance classes offers fun, fitness, and plenty of social opportunities. The better prepared that students are, the more they'll get from the class, so it's up to parents to ensure their children are ready to go once the lesson starts. Here are a few simple ways you can prepare your child for the fun ahead.
Do:
Get to class on time.
Delays happen, but strive to be on time. If possible, leave early enough to get to class at least ten minutes before the lesson is supposed to start. This ensures the class can begin on time and that instructors can cover all the important topics in the time allotted. If tardiness is unavoidable, make sure your young dancer enters the room as quietly as possible to avoid disrupting the class while in session.
Visit the restroom before.
Arriving early also ensures dancers have time to use the restroom before class. Kids will be allowed to have bathroom breaks when needed, but visiting the restroom before class helps keep disruptions to a minimum. It also helps maintain a smooth flow, allowing your dancer to better concentrate on the dances.
Don't:
Distract the class while it's in session.
Only enter the classroom when invited by the instructor. Concentration is important during dance lessons, as students must remain focused on the instructions being given. Parents are encouraged to remain outside while the class is in session, both to prevent distractions and to allow the instructor to hold the focus of young students.
Give your child food or drink.
Food and water breaks may be provided during longer, intensive classes. However, parents should not give snacks to kids to take into class, which can also cause distractions.
Other dancers might want snacks themselves, or students might cause messes that need to be addressed before the lesson can continue. Instead, make sure your child eats before class starts so they have the energy to perform.
