Dance is an excellent cardiovascular activity for children to enjoy at any age. Not only does dancing provide health benefits by getting youngsters moving, joining dance classes can help them build social skills, become more creative, and develop body awareness. But while all children can benefit from dance, not all are ready at a young age for organized dance classes. Look for a few tell-tale signals from your children before enrolling them in a dance program.

What Are Some Signs Your Child Is Ready For Dance Class?

1. Is Already Groovin'

If your child stands in front of the television and jumps, bumps, and shimmies to the music from her favorite show, it is a signal that she may be ready to participate in a dance class. A youngster curious about music and movement could benefit from participating in an organized class to learn new moves and perhaps build a lifelong appreciation of the art.

2. Can Listen Well

Most dance schools accept children as young as two or three years old to participate in dance class, but not all two and three-year-olds have the attention span required for dance instruction. If your child is a good listener, can stay attentive, and follow directions, the dance class will be a satisfying and enjoyable activity. A less focused child may find dance class more challenging, but dancing school is not out of the question if your child can follow directions. It can be a fun way to learn new skills.

3. Is OK Away From You

Dance classes typically run for about 45 minutes to an hour per session. If your child is comfortable being apart from you for that relatively short period, they will do well. Parents may be permitted to watch the first class to give the youngster the chance to acclimate to the new environment, but most schools will request parents remain outside the studio, so the child is not distracted by them during the lesson.

4. Is Comfortable With Peers

A dance class could be intimidating to a child not accustomed to being around a large group of youngsters. Some children may be excited and engaged in a large class, while others may feel uncomfortable dancing next to their peers. Dance schools typically have several class options. Younger students feeling less confident could benefit from a small class where teachers can give more personal attention to the fewer students to ensure your child gets the most from the program.
