From acne to age spots, a dermatologist can prescribe the right treatments to improve most skin complaints. However, implementing a quality skin care practice at night can increase the effectiveness of these solutions. Wake up with healthy, glowing skin by following these four steps.

The Ultimate Nighttime Skin Care Routine

1. Cleanse Twice

Modern makeup and sunscreen products are designed to stand up to sweat, UV rays, oil, and even moisture, making them a challenge to remove. However, any residue can prevent skin cells from shedding, creating congestion and acne. For that reason, wash your face twice using a gentle cleanser. Utilize warm water to help break down products, dirt, and oil, lather for 60 seconds at least, and then rinse or wipe your face clean with a damp washcloth.

In some cases, you can use a skin brush to encourage exfoliation, and you can also steam your face to open up pores using hot water in the sink. However, individuals with heat-sensitive skin issues, like rosacea, should skip that step.

2. Treat Problems

Clean skin provides the ideal base for applying topical ointments and serums as the solutions can easily penetrate pores without blocking barriers. As such, apply acne and sunspot treatments after cleansing but before moisturizing. If your dermatologist has recommended a toner or other astringent solution, use it first with a cotton pad and allow it to dry a few minutes before applying creams and serums.

3. Moisturize

Applying a moisturizer helps reduce unnecessary oil production while also hydrating skin, which encourages firmness and combats flaking. If you also utilize an oil-based product, like rosehip oil for acne scarring, it is usually applied on top of lotions to help lock in the moisture. However, always check with a dermatologist to determine the correct order of application for optimal skin health.

4. Hydrate

When the body is dehydrated, it steals water from skin cells, which leaves skin dry, dull, and prone to sagging and wrinkles. Additionally, the cells go through rapid changes overnight to shed old ones and produce new, healthier ones. To prevent dehydration and aid in the turnover process, drink a full glass of water before bed.
