While the casual fan may think boxing is all about punching power, experts know the sport is mostly about technique and footwork. A boxer with superior technique and footwork will almost always beat a boxer who can only throw hard punches. If you want to improve your footwork, here are some exercises and drills to give you an advantage in the ring.

5 Tips to Make Your Boxing Footwork Better

1. Running

To constantly be on the move in the ring, a boxer must build their endurance. One of the best ways to increase your stamina is by running regularly. Biking is also a worthwhile alternative.

Boxing2. Jump Rope

Like boxing, mastering the jump rope takes coordination and rhythm. Additionally, the jump rope exercises your fast-twitch muscles and forces you to stay on your toes.

3. Agility Drills

Being agile and light on your feet can help you dance circles around your opponent. An agility ladder is an easy-to-use and inexpensive exercise tool. Practice running forward and backward through it without stepping on the rungs.

4. Leg Press

Leg strength will also help your footwork by allowing you to more easily switch speeds and contributing to punching power. A leg press machine can help you build muscle. If you don’t have a leg press machine, do box jumps.

5. Shadow Boxing

Partner up and work on your footwork with a fellow boxer. No punches need to be thrown as you both work on how to counter each other’s movements. If you don’t have a partner, shadow boxing under the watchful eye of a coach can also deliver results.
