When taking a lot of hits in boxing, a mouthguard protects your teeth and lowers your risk of serious injuries. Since many types are available to suit different fighters, consult the guide below to learn more about how a mouthguard works and how to choose the right one for you.

Why You Need a Mouthguard for Boxing

BoxingA punch to the face creates a shock wave through the skull. Your teeth and jaws take the majority of the impact, followed by the neck and spine. The force can chip teeth, dislocate jaws, and cause whiplash. In extreme cases, the brain can bash against the internal walls of the skull, which can lead to a concussion. A mouthguard protects you from a punch’s impact by limiting the size of the shock wave.

How to Choose the Right One

Type

There are two main types of mouthguard: boil-and-bite and custom. Boil-and-bite is an over-the-counter version used in mild contact sports. You heat the mold in hot water, then insert it in your mouth to shape it to your teeth. Since it’s made of soft plastic, it may only last a month or two. It typically doesn’t form a tight seal and may fall out easily during activity.

A custom version fitted by a dentist is much more durable. It creates greater suction against the roof of the mouth to limit slipping or falling out, providing a more comfortable fit. Its thicker material also offers more protection. It’s more expensive but can last a couple of years before being replaced.

Thickness

It may seem like thicker mouthguards offer better protection, while thinners one are more comfortable. The reality is that a mouthguard’s thickness should vary throughout its structure.

It should be thicker in the high-impact areas, like the front of the teeth and under the molars. Behind the teeth and against the roof of the mouth should be thinner. This combination provides ample protection while allowing you to breathe, talk, and drink without disruption.

Designer

Although this is more about personal preference than safety, you can add logos, colors, or your name to a custom mouthguard. These cosmetic changes will cost more.
