Taking on your first boxing match is a significant milestone, and you want to be prepared to win it. Challenging another person one-on-one requires more than just the right conditioning exercises. Here are some tried-and-true tips for boxers of all weight classes.
How to Get Ready for Your First Fight
1. Make Time for Rest
Although it may seem counterintuitive, any professional athlete will tell you that rest is essential to excellent physical performance. Overtraining before a match will only wear you out on the big day.
In the week or two before a match, limit your daily boxing training to an hour a day, and book at least one full day of rest. Your body and fighting record will thank you for it.
2. Learn About Your Opponent
Because boxing is one-on-one, it’s smart to learn as much about your opponent as possible. If you’re fighting a fellow first-timer, you may not have much to go on, but for anyone else, try to find videos of their previous matches. Note their height, how they attack and defend themselves, and any other techniques they employ. Work with your coach to develop the best strategy against them.
3. Get in the Right Mindset
A little nervousness before your first boxing match is normal, but it shouldn’t overwhelm you. To calm your nerves, do your best to maintain a sleep schedule, especially the day before. You may also want to practice meditation, if you don’t do so already.
