When you’re in the boxing ring, your ability to throw punches will make all the difference in your success. If you want to get more punches in, here’s what you should know to improve your skills.

How to Punch Faster

1. Practice Makes Perfect

The more energy you put into perfecting your moves, the better you’ll become. Practicing with a speed bag puts you in the perfect position to improve your movement and coordination while elevating your speed. Throw compact and focused punches at a bag that hangs at about mouth level. Move in quick, short strokes, and increase your speed as you develop a rhythm.

2. Condition Your Arms

Honolulu, HI boxingYou won’t have the same degree of strength late in a boxing match that you do early in the round. That’s why you need to train yourself to handle fatigue so you can punch with just as much speed and efficiency.

To build up your arm and shoulder strength, you’ll need a partner to steady a punching bag. Punch it continuously for at least 20 seconds, then hold the bag while your partner does the same. Follow this routine until you’ve finished at least three minutes’ worth of nonstop punching, and strive to keep up the same pace and speed. Aim for at least three sets.

3. Straighten Your Throw

The fanciest maneuvers are the ones most likely to slow you down. You don’t need to be artsy when you’re trying to throw the fastest possible punches. Jabs and hooks should be issued straight, not to the side or the bottom. The shorter the distance that your hand has to travel, the more intensity you can put into a powerful strike.
