Hand wraps are designed to protect your hands while boxing. Every boxer should take the time to put them on before stepping into the ring or hitting the heavy bag. Here is an introduction to their benefits and what to consider when choosing a wrap.

Why Are Hand Wraps Necessary?

Boxing hand wraps safeguard and support your hands, particularly the knuckles and wrists. They also protect the skin, small bones, and tendons since they distribute shock during a punch. Made from cloth strips or tape, they’re fastened with tape or Velcro® before placing your hands in gloves.

Wraps also help fill your gloves. If there’s any empty space inside, your hand can slide around, increasing your risk of injury and making your delivery less effective.

Hand wraps are essential every time you punch at full force, even during training and sparring. During a fight or tournament, officials will double-check that both hands are wrapped and ready under gloves. Many professional boxers will wrap their hands even when they shadow box alone, so they can practice punches with the same equipment used in a fight. You can also find what is most comfortable for you and train with those conditions every time.

How to Choose Wraps

boxerThe first step is to figure out the length and width you need. What you choose will mostly be based on personal comfort, but the bigger your hands, the more wrap you will need.

Fasteners can also affect your decision. For example, Velcro fasteners are best with wider wraps to give you a better grip. In general, two inches is the standard width.

Most boxers favor cloth wraps. Reusable and available in 180 and 210 inches in length, they come in a spectrum of colors.

There are also elastic bandages that stretch to better fit around your hands and stay in place as you move.

For a lighter feel, go for tape or gauze. Many professional boxers use tape because it provides top-notch protection for any situation and is easy to fasten.
