A Guide to Punching Bags
1. Heavy Duty Bag
This is the kind that most people think of when they hear punching bag. Often filled with grains, sand, or rags, a heavy duty bag hangs from the ceiling. The filling gives the bag weight and resistance. You can practice various punches on a heavy duty bag, and over time, it will improve your muscle tone and strength.
2. Freestanding Bag
This bag is similar to a heavy duty one, only it’s attached to a stand on the floor rather than to the ceiling. It’s filled with the same materials, so it has a similar weight that helps build strength.
The base is filled with water or sand to prevent it from toppling over. Some even have spring-loaded designs to bounce back after particularly powerful blows.
3. Speed Bag
Boxers who want to develop their reflexes and timing often use the speed bag. The smaller, teardrop-shaped bag is attached to a swivel and hanging platform.
The goal is to keep the bag swinging back and forth, which requires precise strikes at a steady speed. It helps you build a rhythm, so you can develop muscle memory and timing.
4. Upper Cut Bag
The upper cut is a useful tool in your arsenal of punches. However, it’s a difficult punch to practice on traditional bags because of the angle it requires. The upper cut bag mounts on a wall and has an overhanging outcrop for you to target.
5. Double End Bag
About the size of speed bag, this model is attached to both the floor and the ceiling. When punching it, the bag moves away with the force of a punch before springing back toward you. You’ll need a fast reaction time and good footwork to hit it a second time. It’s also the best tool to practice your slips to avoid getting hit by the bag as it bounces back.
