The Hawaiian lū‘au is a unique experience that embodies the islands' culture. With a history that extends back more than two centuries, this unique ceremony traditionally celebrated significant milestones or events. For over 30 years, Old Lāhaina Lū‘au has maintained and honored the custom to the delight of Maui's residents and tourists alike and they have prepared their authentic outfoor and open space to their lū‘au beginning December 20, 2020.

What's the History of the Hawaiian Lū‘au?

In 1819, the first lū‘au celebrated King Kamehameha abolishing the ancient mealtime rituals of separate dining for men and women. The initial ceremony originally referred to as the aha'aina, or gathering meal soon paved the way for subsequent festivities. Thereafter, the celebration would be held to commemorate special events or the arrival of honored guests. Later, the celebrations became colloquially known as "lū‘au," after the main dish made of taro leaves, chicken, and coconut milk.

Traditionally, the lū‘au would bring together attendees, who would sit on the floor around a sprawling centerpiece of florals. In addition to the lū‘au dish, the celebrations would feature a menu of sweet potatoes, poi, bananas, and platters of various fish and meat, all of which would be eaten by hand.

Over time, entertainment became commonplace at the festivities. The gatherings would feature hula dancing and ukulele playing. As Hawaiian tourism boomed through the 1930s and 50s, the modern lū‘au became a popular attraction.

Today, guests often receive a flower lei and are introduced to Hawaiian culture through authentic storytelling. These contemporary celebrations may blend modern elements with traditions, offering mixed drinks and decadent desserts alongside Hawaiian foods such as taro and sweet potato.

What Can You Expect From Old Lāhaina Lū‘au's Reopening?
