Springtime tends to be most notoriously associated with allergies, but the fall brings its own fair share of symptoms. Beyond sneezing, sniffling, and coughing, allergies can also impact your eyes and vision. If you've ever gone to the optometrist with itchy eyes in the spring or fall, you're no stranger to these adverse effects, but each allergy season is different and can impact unsuspecting people. Even if you've never experienced allergies, here's a helpful list of ways it can affect your eyes to stay aware and prepared.

How Do Seasonal Allergies Affect Your Eyes?

1. Itchy Eyes

Itchiness is commonly associated with seasonal allergies. Your throat might get scratchy, and so can your eyes. If you're feeling the constant urge to scratch your eyes, it's likely due to allergies, since irritants like pollen, cause histamines to release in the eye's tissues.

2. Blurry Vision

If dust or pollen gets into your eyes or you're experiencing itchiness or irritation, your vision can be blurred or compromised. If this is the case, driving, walking, working, or engaging in daily activities can become difficult, so an optometrist might recommend medicated eye drops or another kind of lubricant.

3. Inflammed Eyes

With all the irritation of seasonal allergies, your eyes are likely to become swollen. Whether it's just your eyelids, the bottom of the eye, or the entirety of it, inflammation is uncomfortable if not painful. It's best to visit an optometrist to make sure that this symptom is allergy-related and not indicative of another underlying condition. Either way, a professional will be able to assess your symptoms and provide adequate care.
