If you’re looking for an alternative to prescription glasses, you might be nervous about trying contact lenses. It’s natural to hesitate when putting these in, since your natural instinct will be to avoid touching the surface of your eyes. However, with a little practice and by following these steps, you’ll become an expert in no time.

How to Put Contact Lenses In

1. Wash Your Hands

The immune system in the eye is more sophisticated than anywhere else in the body, but small particles of dirt and dust and accidental scratches can cause infections and painful injuries. Before attempting to put in a contact lens, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

2. Clean the Lenses

To further reduce the risk of harming your eye, pour a small amount of contact lens cleaning solution in the palm of your hand or a clean dish, and submerge each lens in the pool. Gently move it back and forth for about 15 seconds to clean it. Don’t use tap water, glasses cleaning sprays, or any other substance that isn’t specifically formulated for contacts.

3. Hold the Lens on Your Fingertip

Gently move the lens onto the tip of your finger without using fingernails or other sharp or edged items. Make sure the lens isn’t inside-out to ensure it’s comfortable and effective. When viewed from the side, the lens should look like a hemisphere rather than a bowl with a flared rim.

4. Insert the Lens

Using your free hand, carefully pull on the upper eyelid and hold it open. If necessary, use a free finger on the same hand to open the lower lid, as well. Looking into a mirror, bring the lens up to your eye and lightly touch it to the surface of the eyeball. It shouldn’t require any pushing or force to fit into place. After inserting it, blink several times and make sure the lens is sitting comfortably.
