Whether it’s your first time using them or you’ve had your prescription updated, wearing new glasses may require an adjustment period. Some people are able to begin wearing their new eyewear right away without any issues. For others, the eyes need some time to adjust. Here’s what to expect during the transitional period.

Why Do Eyes Need to Adjust to New Glasses?

Your brain and eyes are used to seeing a certain way. When you get new glasses, you’re viewing the world through a new lens, and it can be a bit jarring. This is normal, and it doesn’t mean you should go back to your old prescription. Yet, your eyes and brain will need a couple of days to get used to the new view. For some people, it could take up to a week to adjust fully. Adjustment periods may be longer for a significant change in prescription or new frames.

What Are Some Symptoms You May Experience?

During the adjustment period, you might experience eye strain and distorted vision. As your eyes get used to the new lenses, you may also experience challenges with depth perception, making it difficult to tell how far away objects are. Some people also experience a fishbowl effect, in which objects appear bent at their edges. Nausea, headaches, and dizziness are also possible, but extreme or persistent symptoms should be discussed with your eye doctor.

How Can You Get Used to New Glasses?

Fortunately, symptoms are generally mild and fade quickly. The simplest way to help your eyes adjust is to wear your new glasses as much as possible. While some people choose to introduce their glasses gradually at first, it’s not recommended to switch between different prescriptions. This could actually intensify symptoms and may make the adjustment period even longer. Put your new lenses on as soon as you wake up, when your eyes are fresh and will have an easier time adjusting to the new view.
