A motorcycle is a perfect ride to take for a relaxing weekend trip or to use as your main means of transportation any day of the week. Whichever you prefer, performing maintenance at regular intervals will help prevent costly motorcycle repairs. Use this guide to care for your bike and keep it running safely for a long time.

A Motorcycle Maintenance Checklist

1. Check the Oil

One of the easiest methods for avoiding motorcycle repairs is to check the oil level before each trip. You’ll need to consult your owner’s manual for the precise mileage; however, in general, change the oil at least once a year. If you regularly use the bike or commonly drive down dusty roads, the oil will likely degrade quicker and need changing more often.

2. Inspect the Chain & Sprocket

Every 400 to 500 miles inspect the chain by rotating it around the wheel. Check for a dry chain and look for wear on both the chain and sprocket. Then, clean off any grease buildup and lubricate the chain with fresh grease.

3. Replace the Air Filter

A motorcycle air filter traps dirt, dust, and other unwanted particles from entering the engine. Replace this filter once or twice a year to prevent clogs that would reduce your bike’s performance. If you notice decreased fuel economy, power loss, or rough idling, it could be a sign that you’re overdue for a filter replacement.

4. Use the Recommended Fuel

When reading your owner’s manual, be sure to check what the recommended fuel type is. Most likely, the fuel system was designed to work with a specific grade. Using a higher or lower grade might cause you to experience performance issues. You might also need motorcycle repairs more often because parts are failing quicker than normal.
