In a 2020 survey, 40.99 million people in the United States used dentures. This specialized mouthpiece can replace some or all of your teeth if missing or extracted by a family dentist. When cared for properly, your dentures can last 7 to 10 years. To get the most out of this oral device, use this guide to the do's and don'ts of denture care.

Do:

Remove them before bed.

You will need to take your dentures out for at least 6 hours every time. This gives your dentures an opportunity to soak and time for your oral tissues to heal. If your dentures have a metal clasp, soak them in warm water overnight. Otherwise, a denture cleaner recommended by your family dentist is sufficient for staving off bacteria.

Rinse them after eating.

Just like natural teeth, dentures need to be cleaned after every meal. A quick rinse under cold water eliminates any trapped food particles and lingering bacteria. Be careful when you handle your dentures so they don't slam into any hard surfaces while you rinse. To prevent your dentures from getting damaged, place a towel in the sink bowl or on the counter as a buffer if they slip out of your hands.

Don't:

Use tugging motions when chewing.

Learning to chew with your dentures can take some time to get used to. In order to prevent chipping or breaking your dentures, avoid taking large bites, biting down on hard foods or tugging using the front teeth. When eating foods, like a sandwich, make sure you have bitten completely through before pulling away. Attempting to tear away can pull the dentures out of place.

Break or compromise them.

Dentures are expensive, so you want them to last as long as possible. In order keep them in good condition, they require diligent care and thoughtful attention. Always handle your dentures gently when taking them out, putting them in, cleaning and brushing them. Don't toss them around when not in your mouth. Help protect your oral health by keeping it sanitized and clean.
