Scorching temperatures and extreme humidity can diminish your car battery's performance, even to the point of dying. If your battery runs out while you're on the road, you'll need to call a towing service for help. But in many cases, taking preventative measures during the summer will help you avoid this scenario. Here's what you need to know about how hot weather can take a toll on a vehicle’s battery and tips for protecting this power source.

How Summer Heat Affects Battery Performance

When the summer temperatures crank up, the seasonal change may weaken a battery’s electrical charge. Without adequate power being sent to the engine and other mechanical systems, your car may not start up.

Hot weather can also cause battery fluid to evaporate. This mix of sulfuric acid and distilled water provides the electricity needed to make a battery work. Without the fluid, a stall or ignition failure may occur at the most inconvenient times.

Additionally, the summer heat can cause sulfuric acid to harden and corrode around the battery's terminals, which can prevent the battery from producing enough voltage to start the vehicle.

What You Can Do to Protect Your Car Battery

To confirm your battery's condition, have an auto repair technician check it. They'll top off the battery fluid, clean off corrosion, and ensure the mount is securely in place.

After driving, turn off all interior and exterior lights and the radio before turning off your car to minimize battery drainage. If possible, park in a shaded area or garage to avoid direct sunlight exposure and curb battery fluid evaporation. Also, try to limit short driving trips because the battery typically won’t have enough time to fully recharge, which can cause premature power drainage.

If the battery dies and your car refuses to start up while you're out, contact an emergency towing service for a jumpstart or roadside assistance.
