Texas has thousands of miles worth of scenic beauty that's better appreciated in person. The best way to do that is through road trips so that you can make the most of the diverse cuisine, incomparable views, and historical perspectives offered by the Lone Star State. Given its size, miles will fly by between here and there. To make sure you have peace of mind in every one of the 962 cities, learn more about how car insurance works in Texas.

What Are the Minimum Car Insurance Requirements in Texas?

Texas law requires motorists to carry a 30/60/25 minimum of car insurance to pay for accidents they're at fault for. Most drivers purchase an auto liability plan, which covers the repair or replacement of the other driver's vehicle. If necessary, a liability policy will cover other damaged property and related medical expenses.

A 30/60/25 plan provides $30,000 worth of injury coverage per person, up to $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. If the costs exceed these amounts, the at-fault driver pays the difference out of pocket. The minimum is rarely enough, especially if you're responsible for a multi-car accident. Raising the liability limits will provide more coverage. Most drivers also add policies to cover their own injuries and damaged property.

What's Covered Under Most Car Insurance Plans?

Covered

Car Insurance

Most basic plans will cover you or any named individuals on your policy if an accident occurs while driving a rental car. The plans also provide coverage if you're driving in other states or Canada. If you're sued due to an accident, the insurance will cover the cost of an attorney.

Not Covered

Basic plans won't cover you if you're using a vehicle for commercial purposes, like delivering food or providing a ride-hailing service.

Many use pieces of equipment in their car for convenience, but they won't be covered unless they're permanently installed.

Insurance plans also will not cover intentional damage.

However, there are purchasable plans and riders to extend your policy to cover some of these situations.

Does My Texas Car Insurance Policy Follow Me to Mexico?

American insurance policies aren't recognized in Mexico or don't meet the country's legal standards. Frequent visitors would benefit from a Mexican liability policy, which is purchasable from many agents on this side of the border.
