Gallery walls are becoming more popular than ever. This trend creates statement walls within a room by hanging up multiple framed pictures of different shapes and sizes in a collage format. If you're interested in highlighting some of your most precious pieces of photography, the following guide can help you design a stunning new focal point in your home.

Do:

Opt for professional photographs.

If you can, include high-resolution images from a professional photography session. This guarantees you'll have images that don't warp or lose quality if you need to blow them up into larger prints. Whether the photos are from a family session, wedding, or engagement shoot, a gallery wall provides an ideal solution for lovingly displaying meaningful memories for you and your guests to enjoy.

However, you can also hang nonprofessional photos and pieces of art. Include images from overseas adventures and ones of your pets, as well. Incorporate other fun framed items, like pressed flowers and world maps, to add variety to the wall. Consider investing in custom framing for the pieces that need it to ensure the prints match or complement one another.

Plan the frame choices carefully.

The frames you select will have a major impact on the overall aesthetic of your gallery wall, so think carefully about what you want to achieve. If the room boasts a minimalist, modern look, opt for frames that are the same shape and color but in varying sizes. For something more eclectic, play around with square, circular, and rectangular frames made of wood, brass, and chrome.

Don't:

Overlook the importance of placement.

Select a wall that is easily accessible and viewed from an area you regularly spend time in, like the wall behind the couch in your living room. Another possibility could be along the staircase leading to the top floor of your home.

Avoid placing the gallery in a room that doesn't get much use, such as a guest bedroom. Don't hang the photos somewhere where they will compete for attention, such as behind a TV.

Neglect a focal point.

Most wall galleries feature one central image; this piece is often slightly larger and more dramatic than the rest. This allows you to build out from the center to create a more cohesive design. If you don't have a focal piece, the end result could feel unplanned or unbalanced.
