A family photo shoot is a great way to create a lasting memory that you can enjoy for years to come. With regular pictures, you can track your children's growth, providing a beautiful visual record of their transition from childhood to adulthood. Follow the below do's and don'ts to create a wonderful photo with minimal hassle.

Do:

Plan your outfits in advance.

Pick out clothing for yourself, your partner, and your children at least two days in advance. Set aside a backup wardrobe—and bring it with you to the photo shoot. You never know if you'll spill juice or food onto your clothes the day of the appointment, or if your pants may pick up a grass stain while walking to the location, so it's best to be prepared.

Be patient.

Props can help your family engage with one another naturally. They will also take the focus away from the photographer, allowing for easy-to-capture, candid moments. This can be especially useful if your kids are camera-shy by helping them relax. For example, two items—like a stuffed animal and a flower—should be plenty to keep your children at ease and happy if they're nervous.

If you're outside, the kids may want to run and play, refusing to stand still for a photo. If you're shooting at home, a pet may get curious and make their way into the photos. However, it's important to remain calm so that you can stay focused on completing the session and keeping your family happy and relaxed. Try to get the children to come around by promising them you'll play right after the photos are done, or convince your pet you'll give them a treat as you head inside for a moment.

Don't:

Rush the process.

If possible, block off at least half a day for your photo shoot so that you can account for getting ready, leaving on time to beat traffic, and making sure there are no last-minute weather changes. It's important to have plenty of time to prepare and enjoy the process with your family. Making it into a special occasion can also be fun and help your entire family relax. You could take them out for ice cream afterward or enjoy your favorite meal.

Hire a photographer you don't like.

There are several factors to consider for a family photo op, so do research to find the perfect professional for your photo shoot. You want someone who you feel comfortable and personal with and who will take to working with your family. This will result in more sincere, poignant pictures.
