With the cold months on their way, now is the time to start winterizing your irrigation equipment to protect it until warmer weather returns. Note that preparing your lawn irrigation system for winter isn’t just about closing the main water valve. Irrigation systems need to be properly drained and insulated to keep them from cracking in freezing temperatures. Here are five things you should do before winter hits.

How to Prepare Your Lawn Irrigation System for Cold Weather

1. The Blow-Out Method

The blow-out method uses compressed air to blast any remaining water out of the lines. It requires an air compressor and a quick-connect hose adapter to join the compressor to the sprinkler system. This method also requires more than one person. Eye protection is also highly recommended.

2. Draining on a Slope

Simply turn off the main water supply, open the drain valves, and let gravity do the rest. If your system features an automatic draining system, the system will even take care of most of the work for you. You should be able to run this process from the system’s control panel.

3. Insulate Valves & Pipes

The main shut-off valve for the irrigation system should be wrapped with insulation before the temperatures drop below freezing. Packing pine straw around the valve is a quick and inexpensive insulation method. Any above-ground piping should also be insulated with foam tape or tubes.

4. Protect Your Pump

If your irrigation system has a removable pump, disconnect the pump and store it indoors for the winter. Fixed pumps should be covered in plastic and secured with zip ties or wrapped with an insulating blanket. The power source should also be disconnected or switched to shut-down mode if possible.

5. Hire a Professional

If you’re pressed for time or aren’t familiar with the ins and outs of your system, you can call professional technicians to properly shut down your residential or commercial irrigation system for the winter. You’ll sleep better and avoid any unforeseen costs caused by improper winterizing.
