Asphalt paving may be incredibly durable, but it’s not indestructible. Over time, normal wear and tear make it vulnerable to damage. Certain conditions can speed up this process and cause further disintegration. Here are some of the most common issues that can affect asphalt and the best ways to solve them.

Common Asphalt Issues

1. Depressions

Gasoline, oil, and extremely high temperatures can soften asphalt. When pavement is in this softened state, depressions can occur in some areas. If you notice small portions of the pavement are slightly lower than the surrounding areas, you can fix them by applying thin patches. For deep depressions, you may need to replace the pavement altogether.

2. Raveling

pavingRaveling refers to the separation of the pavement’s aggregates. It’s a form of erosion and can leave pockmarks, jagged edges, and loose debris on the surface of the driveway, parking lot, or road. This can happen if the initial paving mixture lacked enough fine particles to bind the materials. Applying hot asphalt over the problem areas usually fixes raveling.

3. Cracks

Heavy loads, extreme temperature changes, and simple wear and tear can all contribute to cracks. If the entire surface is cracked and crumbling, a complete replacement paving project may be necessary. If you catch smaller cracks before they spread too far, though, you can apply an asphalt sealant to contain them and reinforce the surface. This in turn can prevent the need for repaving for years to come.
