Getting an oil change on a regular basis is an essential part of engine maintenance, yet far too many drivers delay this important service — or even forget it entirely. If you want your engine to last for hundreds of thousands of miles, you can’t ignore this service. To keep everything working properly, knowing when to get an oil change is crucial.

How Often Are Oil Changes Needed?

As with other auto maintenance issues, your first reference source should be your owner’s manual. Depending on your vehicle make and model, the manufacturer may recommend that you get oil changes as infrequently as 7,500 miles or on a more regular interval (such as 3,000 to 5,000 miles). The owner’s manual will also tell you what type of oil you should use for your car to ensure a better performance.

Understanding ‘Severe Service’

Most manufacturers recommend more frequent oil changes — typically after 3,000 miles — for drivers who experience “severe” driving conditions. This doesn’t refer to pickup trucks hauling heavy loads. In fact, these severe conditions are what most drivers encounter on a daily basis — stop and go traffic, trips that are under five miles, and hills.

Most urban and suburban areas qualify as “severe” because these conditions keep the engine from fully burning off accumulated moisture. This causes oil performance to diminish and can eventually damage the engine without more frequent oil changes.
