Your tires are your only contact with the road, so you rely on them for both performance and safety. You must replace them as soon as they are worn or deteriorated, so you’ll have proper handling and consistent traction on the pavement. If you see any of the red flags below, it’s time to head to the auto repair shop for a new set.

How to Know When to Replace Your Tires

1. Sidewall Damage

Mechanics can repair some damage in the tread, such as if you drive over a nail that punctures the tire. However, sidewall damage can never be fixed. Look for cracks, blisters, holes, or bulges that look like tumors. If you can see this type of damage, driving on it is dangerous since you risk a blowout.

2. Thin Tread

covington tiresThe tread is what keeps your grip on the road; over time, the rubber wears off as it’s left behind on the asphalt, and the tread will get so thin it can’t maintain excellent traction. Use the penny test; insert a penny upside down in the groove between the tread, at the spot on the tire where the tread is most worn. If the tread doesn’t reach Lincoln’s head, then they are below 2/32” in depth and need to be replaced.

3. Age

Rubber dries out and loses its elasticity over time. Once the tires get old enough, the rubber is too deteriorated to safely function, even if it has never been driven on. Check your tire’s age in the DOT code on the sidewall. Look at the last four digits.

The first two indicate the week number, while the last two are the year number in the 2000s. For example, if the number is 1415, then the tire was manufactured in the 14th week of 2015. If your set is more than ten years old, it’s due for a replacement.
