Choosing glasses can be a struggle. There are so many types of lenses and frames to choose from—polarized, tinted, round, square, and more. However, the material of the lens itself can change the utility of your eyeglasses. There are two major types of lens materials available commercially: glass and polycarbonate. This guide will walk you through the basics of each and help you select the option that's best for you.

Glass

Glass is the oldest material that eyeglasses have been made out of, dating back to the 13th century. These lenses tend to resist scratches because of their fine grain and hardness. Therefore, they often don't require scratch-resistant or protective coatings. Glass is considered to be the clearest material available.

Glass is heavy. If you have a strong prescription, these lenses may be uncomfortable to wear over large periods of time. Glass has very little impact resistance and can shatter if dropped or hit. Eyeglasses made out of glass also don't protect against UV rays. Additional UV coatings are available to provide protection against the harmful wavelengths.

Polycarbonate

Polycabonate lenses were developed in 1953 and became popular as lens materials in the 1980s. They are the standard material for safety glasses, sports goggles, and children's glasses.

Polycarbonate lenses are impact-proof and won't shatter. They are 10 times stronger than glass or standard plastic. They are also lightweight and thinner than glass lenses, and inherently block all UV rays without a special coating.

Scratch-resistant coatings are a must for polycarbonate lenses, as they are softer than glass and prone to getting scratched. Although the majority of the population has no problem with clarity, some report that polycarbonate lenses aren't as clear as glass lenses.

Choosing the Best Option for You

If you need to have extremely clear vision and work indoors without the threat of impacts to your face or dropping your glasses, glass lenses may be best for you. Glass lenses are also better for those with weaker prescriptions.

Polycarbonate lenses are a must for people who lead an active lifestyle or work in settings with potential hazards, such as construction sites or sports facilities. Some people choose to have two pairs of eyeglasses made, one out of each material, to wear as they see fit.

Both glass and polycarbonate lenses can be a good fit. Consider your lifestyle and consult your optometrist to see which may be right for you.
