When you spend time outdoors during the summer, it's common to apply sunblock to protect your skin. However, ultraviolet (UV) rays can also harm your eyes, so it's important to take precautions before participating in recreational activities, lounging by the pool, or going to the beach. Here's what you should know about UV rays and a few eye care tips during this time of year.

How Do UV Rays Affect the Eyes?

UV rays are strongest during spring and summer. When they make contact with the eyes, they may cause damage to all ocular structures, including the retina, cornea, and lenses. Since the front surfaces of the eyes absorb the majority of UV radiation, benign or malignant tumors may develop on them. It's also possible for these growths to develop on the areas surrounding the eyes. Additionally, UV rays can damage the eyelids, causing the skin to become dry and wrinkled while increasing the risk of melanoma.

Cataracts, which refers to the clouding of the lenses, and macular degeneration, which occurs when the center of the retina deteriorates, are ocular conditions that can occur as a result of prolonged sun exposure. As these disorders progress, they may lead to vision impairments or blindness.

How Can You Protect Your Vision?

Since UV rays are strongest between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., it's best to avoid going outdoors in the middle of the day during summer. However, if you must spend time outside during these hours, wear sunglasses that filter out 99 to 100% of UV rays. This can prevent sunlight from making direct contact with the eyes and surrounding skin, offering protection against damages, diseases, and ocular disorders. Additionally, since glares may produce harsh light that damages the eyes, sunglasses with glare reduction can offer extra protection.

Additionally, wearing a hat with a wide brim may shade the eyes and face from excess sunlight when you go outdoors during summer. If you spend time at the pool or beach, lounging under a large umbrella, tent, or canopy can block excess UV rays.
