An undetected or unaddressed water leak can quickly cause significant damage to the home. If the rupture is coming from a water tank, the immediate goal is stopping the leak. Before the water tank installation technician arrives, here are several steps to follow to help minimize damage to your property.

How to Deal With a Leaking Water Tank

1. Shut Off the Water Valve

If it’s safe to do so, turn off the water supply valve to the tank.  If the water continues to flow, you might have to shut off your home’s main water valve. Keep in mind that this step will turn off access to faucets, showers, and other plumbing in the home.

2. Inspect the Drain Valve

Using your hands, ensure that the valve is completely closed. If it’s loose and you’re not able to close it, call a water tank installation specialist for further instructions to stop the leak temporarily.

3. Turn Off Power

To prevent electrical shock and other injuries, turn off your home’s power supply from the circuit breaker box. This is an important step if the tank is attached to an electric water heater. If you have a gas-powered water heater, turn off the on/off switch on the tank. Whether using an electric or gas water heater, stay out of the area until a water tank installation professional can inspect the appliances for the leak source.
