March is colorectal cancer awareness month, which makes this the perfect time to schedule a virtual colonoscopy if you’re over 50. Many people find this minimally invasive exam much more pleasant than traditional colon cancer screenings. It also exposes patients to less radiation. Use this guide to prepare for your appointment.
How to Prepare for a Virtual Colonoscopy
Just as with a traditional colonoscopy, you will need to empty your colon before the appointment. Your doctor should give you some instructions on how to do this. These may involve taking laxatives the night before, or using a suppository to remove remaining residue.
You will also be advised not to eat or drink anything other than water for a certain period. Your doctor may ask you to temporarily stop taking certain medications, vitamins, and herbs to prepare for the exam.
What to Expect From the Appointment
Your doctor will use a computed tomography (CT) scanner to create a 3D rendering of the intestine, colon, and rectum. This allows them to see polyps or unusual tissue without cameras. During these scans, you’ll get into a hospital gown and remove any metallic accessories.
Your doctor will insert a small tube into the colon to fill it with air or carbon dioxide, which opens the intestine for a clearer image. You may feel a slight pressure. You’ll then lie on your back on a table while the machine takes its pictures. You may need to move to different positions, such as on your stomach or side, and may be asked to hold your breath for short periods. The entire scan typically takes between 10 and 15 minutes, and you can discuss your results immediately.
