Testing for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is a significant aspect of gynecological care. While the concept of testing can be uncomfortable for many women, it's essential for maintaining optimum sexual health and wellness. This guide explains when and why you should go to see your doctor for this service.

Long-Term Effects of Untreated STDs

Timely treatment of all STDs is crucial for avoiding complications. For example, chlamydia and gonorrhea are two common STDs that don't always cause symptoms right away. If left unaddressed, they can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, eventually leading to scar tissue in the fallopian tubes and contributing to fertility problems. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is known for causing genital warts, but it can also lead to cancer of the cervix and in other areas of the body.

How Often Women Should Undergo Testing

All sexually active women should have at least one HIV test, regardless of their age. Testing for syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C should occur during early pregnancy to prevent possible effects on the baby. However, age is a significant factor in how often you need other screenings.

When it comes to HPV, pap smears are used to take samples of cervical cells to look for abnormalities. Women aged 21 through 29 should undergo pap smears every three years, with testing every five years recommended for most women 30 and older. For women who are sexually active and under the age of 25, screenings for chlamydia and gonorrhea should take place once per year.

As for women aged 25 years and older, testing frequency should depend on their sexual habits. Women should receive a yearly test for chlamydia and gonorrhea if they have multiple sexual partners. They should also undergo testing when they have a new sexual partner or when a current partner has disclosed that they've been infected by an STD.
