Whether you’re due for a woman’s wellness exam, you tested positive on a home pregnancy test, or you have a health concern, it’s natural to feel nervous about seeing an OB-GYN. If you prepare for the appointment, though, you can ensure it goes as smoothly as possible. Here are some of the most important steps to take leading up to your doctor’s appointment.

How to Prepare for Seeing Your OB-GYN

1. Record Everything Your Doctor Should Know

When was the first day of your last period? Are you having any problematic symptoms regarding menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause? Are you on any prescription medication? Do you take over-the-counter drugs or supplements regularly?

Chances are your OB-GYN will ask these and other questions, depending on the reason for your visit. To ensure you don’t leave out any pertinent details, write down your answers to all anticipated queries in advance. If you’re having troublesome symptoms, start a log in which you track them in the days or weeks leading up to the appointment to allow for a prompt diagnosis.

2. Confirm Your Cycle

OB/GYNIf you made the appointment a while ago, there’s a chance it will fall during menstruation. While OB-GYNs can address pressing concerns regardless of whether a patient has her period, blood can interfere with test results and make it harder for providers to spot abnormalities during pelvic exams. If it turns out the appointment will fall during your period and it is not an emergency, call and ask the receptionist about rescheduling.

3. Limit Activity “Down There”

Hair removal can cause irritation and inflammation, which will complicate the pelvic exam. Doctors encourage women to stop shaving for a few days or waxing for a few weeks until after their appointments. You should also avoid douching or having sexual intercourse the day before the exam as both can interfere with the results of any tests.
