Navigating icy roads and reduced visibility due to snowfall are two common causes of car accidents during winter. That's why you should stay off the road, when possible, when inclement weather is on the forecast. When you need to get behind the wheel, however, here are winter driving tips to follow. Doing so will help you avoid a collision and the need for a towing service provider to haul your ride to a repair shop.

How to Navigate Winter Roads Safely

1. Increase Your Following Distance

The three-second rule is the standard to follow during the warmer months. By passing lights and road markers three seconds after the car in front of you, you can maintain a safe following distance and increase your response time to avoid an accident.

During winter, increase your following distance to five or six seconds since it could be difficult to see road conditions ahead when it's snowing. It could also take longer to bring the car to a complete stop on the slippery ice- or slush-covered roads.

2. Check the Tire Pressure

Low tire pressure is common during winter because when the temperature drops by 10 degrees Fahrenheit, tires lose one PSI (pounds per square inch) since air condenses in the cold weather. Driving with low tire pressure is dangerous since the friction created as tires move on the pavement creates heat buildup that could cause the sidewalls to rupture. To avoid this concern, check the tire pressure before you hit the road and adjust it according to the manufacturer recommendations.

3. Keep Your Lights On

During winter, the sun can start to set in the afternoon or early evening. So you can see clearly, remember to switch your headlights on during the day, too. You can use the low-beam lights during the day. However, if visibility is particularly poor due to inclement weather, it's best to turn on the high beams to ensure you have a clear view of everything in your path.
