As well as the exciting, fast-paced fun, kayaking also offers incredible health benefits. Those who engage in the exercise will lose weight while toning up faster and also see increases in their stamina and aerobic health. But for individuals new to the sport, there are safety measures to be followed before taking those kayak rentals out on the water.

Kayaking Safety Tips

1. Plan Your Route

As a new paddler, search for small lakes or larger ponds that are popular among beginners. Often, outdoor recreation stores will have a list of viable locations or have someone on staff who can direct you. The waters should be calm and flat. As you gain more experience, you will eventually move on to rapids and surfs.
Prioritize water bodies where motorboats are prohibited, as they can disturb the water or force you to make quick course corrections. If the water has larger boats, stay out of their vicinity, as it is difficult for them to see kayaks and canoes.

2. Dress for Safety

Check the average temperature of the body of water you are kayaking on. If it is below 60°, wear a wetsuit or a drysuit to prevent hypothermia if the kayak capsizes. However, even when temperatures are warm and welcoming, wearing a wetsuit is still a safe practice, as it provides buoyancy and speed while swimming.

3. Invest in Equipment

A personal flotation device (PFD) is mandatory for all kayaking trips. Always attach a whistle to the PFD. A single blow is used to get attention. Three blows mean you need assistance. As a beginner, stay close to the shore, so it will be easier for others to hear the whistle if it is needed.

For more reliability, carry a cellphone in a waterproof case or invest in a VHF radio if reception is spotty.

One- or two-person kayak rentals can be maneuvered with a single paddle; carry spares to provide peace of mind.

Pack a kit with first aid equipment, along with signal flares, and extra food and water. Paddle floats and bilge pumps will keep kayakers safe if they capsize, and a towline will help them get to shore if assistance is needed.
