If you work with construction, factories, teaching, retail, or beauty, your job might require being on your feet for most or all of the day. Foot care is extra important when you stand or walk for hours every day, as the constant pressure could cause bunions, calluses, blisters, and heel pain. Here are a few tips for staying comfortable.

How to Protect Your Feet If You Spend Hours Standing

1. Stretch Frequently

Tense calf muscles can affect the way you walk and cause foot pain. To keep your muscles limber and flexible, find time to stretch your feet and legs during the day.

There are plenty of stretching exercises to select from, such as such as toe stretches. Leg stretches also work the calves and hamstring muscles, helping prevent discomfort when bending, shifting the hips, and walking.

2. Wear Supportive Shoes

Shoe insoles contour around your feet, providing cushioning. They are essential to protect the heels if you have metatarsalgia, a major cause of inflammation and pain.

Consider custom orthotics over retail versions since they'll offer targeted relief. Ensure your footwear fits comfortably as well to avoid friction, which can result in blisters, bunions, hammertoes, and calluses.

3. Take Occasional Breaks

To further rest your feet, set aside time for sitting. For example, if you take 30-minute lunch breaks every day, try to remain seated for the entirety of each meal. Sit up straight to avoid stressing the lower back and shoulders, and feel free to flex your legs and ankles periodically to relax the muscles.

4. Give Your Feet TLC at Home

After work, focus on foot care. Soak your feet in warm water with Epsom salts for about 10 minutes to relieve muscle tension. Essential oils, such as lavender, can also be added to the water to help you relax. Massage your feet to ease tense muscles, then dry them thoroughly and elevate them if they feel swollen.
