Bunions are a common foot ailment amongst American adults. Those with arthritis, flat feet (also known as fallen arches), misaligned feet, or who spend long hours on their feet tend to be at risk of developing these uncomfortable bumps. If you or a loved one have ever experienced bunions, you might be wondering how to prevent them from returning. Here are some tips for bunion relief and prevention.

3 Ways to Relieve and Prevent Bunions

1. Wear Comfortable Shoes

Comfortable shoes are a must! Your feet need to be supported properly to prevent bunions and relieve any resulting pain. Wearing ill-fitting or uncomfortable shoes will strain your foot and pull your big toe away from its proper alignment. You should have room at the toe of the shoe and should be able to wiggle your toes comfortably. Invest in arch support pads if needed and reserve high heels for special occasions or avoid all together.

2. Rest Your Feet

If you work long hours on your feet or if your feet feel particularly tired, rest them! Accumulated tension and pressure in the feet can cause bunions. Soak your feet in an Epsom salt soak, massage them with lotion, and then elevate them. Relaxing your feet and giving them a little love for supporting you all day can go a long way in bunion relief.

3. Stretch and Exercise

Increasing mobility and flexibility in your feet can help relieve pain from bunions and prevent them from forming in the first place. Try rolling a tennis ball around with your foot to massage and loosen the muscles. While sitting in a chair, place a tennis ball on the floor and move it along the length of the foot for about two minutes.

Stretching your feet can also help alleviate pain. With your feet off the floor, point your toes and then flex them back toward the foot as far as you can. You can also try pulling your feet back with a towel. Do this stretch for five seconds at a time and repeat 10 times. If you're unsure about how to do these exercises, contact a podiatrist, as they can help you achieve the perfect alignment.
